Spades for teachers
Spades teaches estimating, mental math with positive and negative numbers, and teamwork. Everything here works without ads, without logins, and nothing your class does is sent to us.
Play on the projector
Projector mode shows big cards and large text with no menus. With all cards shown, the class can see every hand and discuss each bid and play. Press Esc to leave projector mode.
Who wins the trick?
Four random cards; the first card is the lead and spades are trump. Students decide which card wins, then reveal the answer.
Lesson ideas
- Estimating: look at a hand and estimate the tricks it will win, then check after the hand. Who estimated best?
- Integers: scores go negative when a side is set. Practice adding −70 and +142.
- Place value: bags are often kept as the last digit of the score. What happens to 337 when a side takes 3 more bags?
- Probability: you hold 4 spades. How many are left for the other three players? How likely is it that one player holds 5 of them?
- Teamwork: discuss how to protect a partner’s nil.
